Junia is a small state founded by an offshoot
of the Rathor clan of Rajputs, rulers of Jodhpur. Although there are several portraits of Raja
Raj Singh, seen here on the left, little is known about him. This painting is said to be in the style of the artist Chand who worked for the Raja in 1698.

Physical description
Painting, in opaque watercolour and gold on paper, of Thakur Raj Singh and another nobleman seated on a terrace. In the background there is a dense garden in charbarg design, with water courses and fountains, peacocks and different coloured birds perching in the trees. The ruler is sitting, drinking wine and eating pan and fruit; both men wear transparent jamas, over orange and purple trousers respectively, they sit on a pale yellow carpet.

In the style of Chand, although the drawing appears more tentative than in the large study of Raj Singh drinking in a garden with two attendants in the collection of Kumar Sangram Singh of Nawalgarh, Jaipur.
