Bowl

late 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Bowl (Batil), oval in shape in plan; of silver with repoussé and engraved decoration. On the base is a crossed knife and sheath surrounded by foliage enclosed by a circular border of stamped semi-floral motifs; there are four small feet comprising a dome and knob; round the body of the bowl is a punched zig-zag band above which is a band of pointed ovals alternating with a floral motif, next a band of foliage pattern and finally a narrow border of punched zig-zag pattern; the rim of the bowl is slightly turned outwards.

The type of knife engraved on the base being nearer to the type found in Borneo and not a kris suggests that this bowl may have been made in Borneo, or on the Malay peninsular for a Borneo customer.
