PAGE FROM THE ISKANDARNAMA OF NIZAMI Opaque watercolour and ink on paper. Sultanate, North India, c. 1500 FUNERAL OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT IS.31-1980 After the capture of Delhi in 1192, Muslim rule was established in North India. A ‘Sultanate’ style eventually emerged in architecture and painting. Although often based on Iranian models, the paintings show varying degrees of Indian influence in the treatment of colour, composition and other details. This manuscript page is from the Iskandarnama, an epic poem in Persian on the mythologised life of Alexander the Great. It was written by the great poet Nizami (1141–1209).(27/9/2013)
