ABUL HASAN QUTB SHAH OF GOLCONDA WITH FEMALE COMPANIONS Opaque watercolour and gold on paper Golconda c. 1680 IS.57-1949 P.C. Manuk and Miss G.M. Coles Bequest through the Art Fund Abul Hasan Qutb Shah (r.1672-87), nicknamed ‘Tana Shah’, is shown listening to music with female companions. He was the last ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty of Golconda (near Hyderabad), which was renowned for its diamonds. After a lengthy siege, Golconda was captured by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, bringing him great wealth. Abul Hasan spent the remaining years of his life as a prisoner.(27/9/2013)
