MIAN MUKUND DEV OF JASROTA WITH A GOSHAWK By Nainsukh Opaque watercolour and gold on paper Jasrota, Punjab Hills c. 1746 IS.185-1951 From the collection of Sir William Rothenstein Purchased with the assistance of Lady Rothenstein and the Art Fund Nainsukh (c. 1710-78) belonged to a family of painters who originated from Guler in the Punjab Hills. In this painting Mukund Dev holds and strokes the breast feathers of a goshawk, a powerful raptor commonly depicted in Indian paintings. He wears a glove to protect his hand from the bird’s sharp talons, and a spare one hangs at his back.(01/08/2017)
