Kulu or Bahu, Punjab Hills
c. 1700-10
IS.15-1954
From the collection of
Sir William Rothenstein
The painting comes from a Ragamala or ‘garland of ragas’, a series of pictorial depictions of various melodic frameworks in Indian classical music. The major ragas have ‘wives’ and ‘sons’. An inscription in Takri, a script used in the Punjab Hills, identifies the musical mode illustrated here as Varadhana raga, the ‘son’ of Hindola raga. The painting
is from a large ragamala series that is characterised by a very free style of drawing and remarkable colour combinations.(01/08/2017) |
