Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, design for a circular shield of the reign if Maharana Sangram Singh of Udaipur (1710-1734). The head of Surya appears in the centre, surrounded by four red and gold bosses against a black ground. Around the outer rim is a continuous hill and lake landscape with scanes of boar, lion, deer hunting. A narrow yellow border patterned in green. This shield proved not to be of the early 18th century, but more likely an early 20th century copy.

| Object history | The style of the hunting scenes relates to Udaipur painting under Maharana Sangram Singh. A surviving painted shield of this period in the National Museum, New Delhi, has been published by O. P. Sharma, Studies in Museology, V, 1969; a later example is in the collection of Mrs Wendy Finday, New York. |
