Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, design for a circular shield of the reign if Maharana Sangram Singh of Udaipur (1710-1734). The head of Surya appears in the centre, surrounded by four red and gold bosses against a black ground. Around the outer rim is a continuous hill and lake landscape with scanes of boar, lion, deer hunting. A narrow yellow border patterned in green. This shield proved not to be of the early 18th century, but more likely an early 20th century copy.

Object history
The style of the hunting scenes relates to Udaipur painting under Maharana Sangram Singh. A surviving painted shield of this period in the National Museum, New Delhi, has been published by O. P. Sharma, Studies in Museology, V, 1969; a later example is in the collection of Mrs Wendy Finday, New York.
