Vishnu and Lakshmi

Painting
late 18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Painting, opaque watercolour on paper, Vishnu sits with Lakshmi on a lotus throne with pink petals and an unpainted, waisted base flanked by two female figures. Vishnu is four-armed, and holds in his right hands the chakra and the mace, and in his left the lotus and the conch. A striped scarf is draped over his arms. Lakshmi is sombrely clad, in orange bodice and skirt with a reddish-brown odhni over her head. The pair are covered by a chhati (umbrella) and two white birds fly past. The background is in the typical slate blue used by the Mandi painters, and the somewhat coarse feature of the two main figures are also characteristic of the Mandi style. The two supporting female figures show European influence, but otherwise the painting is in the mainstream of the Mandi style.
