Materials and techniques
Black/white marble and possibly silver. The plate and cover were fashioned by turning on a lathe, possibly bow-driven. The silvery lines appear to have been made either by melting a metal powder that had then been placed into the finely engraved channels or by pouring a molten metal into them.
Brief description
Circular plate and cover, black marble with white marble inlay, inscribed, Monghyr, 19th century
Physical description
A circular plate and fitted cover, fashioned in black marble. The plate has a raised ring just set in from the rim, to locate the cover in place and on the base there are three round plugs of white marble that have been ground flush with the base, equally spaced near the edge. There is an engraved inscription to the base.
The cover is dished when inverted, with a flat top. The upper, external surface has a symmetric, inlaid design of white marble together with fine-lined, inset motifs in a bright, slivery metal. There are also two inset concentric slivery lines near the edge.
