The tutelary mountain gods, Oyamakui no Kami and Onamuchi no Kami from Mount Miwa, respectively called the ‘Little Hiei Deity’ and the ‘Big Hiei Deity’, were said to have resided on Mount Hiei in ancient times. As guardians of this sacred mountain, they were given the appellation Sanno (‘Mountain Kings’) and worshipped at the Hie Jinja shrine. The Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, who ruled Japan from 1603 to 1605, became a patron of the Hie Shrine and worshipped the deity as the protector of Edo. This print features a magnificent float at the Sanno Festival, which is held annually in April to worship the Sanno gods.

Toshiba Gallery: This print depicts a magnificent float at the Sanno Festival, one of three major festivals held annually in Edo (modern Tokyo). The Sanno (‘Mountain Kings’) deities were enshrined in the Hie Jinja, a shrine located in Akasaka, and acted as guardians against evil spirits. The Hie Jinja was originally built in the 15th century.(23/08/2013)

Purchased from Sotheby & Co. (Sale of the Happer Collection), accessioned in 1909. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
