Migata Toshihide (1863-1925) began this series of prints of 18 popular scenes from Kabuki and Noh plays in 1893 and they were issued in album format.
In this double-sheet sized print we see Taira no Tomomori, a commander of the recently defeated Taira clan at the Battle of Dan-no-Ura (1185) appearing to his rival Minamoto Yoshitsune and his followers as they attempt to cross a river. He has come to revenge his family's defeat and attempts to drown Yoshitsune. The warrior Benkei finally pacifies and subdues Tomomori's spirit and saves the group through the use of his rosary and by chanting Buddhist scriptures.
