Design for the Princess in the Finale at the Winstone Club Cabaret, showing an impressionistically painted full length female figure, wearing an Eastern style costume consisting of a brassiere top and an ankle length skirt in silver and white, the skirt patterned at the hem with curving white geometric patterns and with strings of white beads attached at the hips, and a high, silver and white feathered headdress She wears a white and silver beaded necklace and collar, and on each arm silver and white armbands at the upper arm and wrists linked by a double string of white beads decorated towards the wrist with two silver tassels. The design is painted on blue paper and is signed and dated and inscribed with the name of the actor, the character, the scene and the venue. A swatch of silver fabric is stapled to the top left hand corner.

Object history | This is one of a collection of designs for pantomime and cabaret, given to the Theatre Museum by the designer, Cynthia Tingey, who created the costumes for 15 of the annual London Palladium pantomimes. This design was made for Amanda Barrie as the Princess in the Finale of a cabaret at the Winstone Club, London, 1957. Historical significance: An example of cabaret costume design of the second half of the 20th century and of the work of a designer who specialised in pantomime and variety design. |
