In order to compete with fashionable and expensive imports from Venice, some of the Holy Roman Empire’s princes began poaching glassworkers from Murano in Italy in the 1530s, setting up their own manufactories for enamelled glass in southern Germany and the Tyrol region in Austria. The Fugger of Augsburg was one of the most wealthy and influential families in the region, having made their money as merchants and bankers. One of their descendants ordered a substantial glass dinner service in Venetian style, each piece prominently enamelled with the Fugger coat of arms. This serving dish is one of the rare survivals from that set.
