Costume design for The Cambodian Bridegroom in Aladdin on Ice, showing a full length Male figure with bare arms outstretched. The figure wears baggy gold lurex trousers which gather at the ankle and waist, gold cumberband, gold brocade vest, and gold ice skates. Four gold and white tabs decorated with stylised gold leaves hang from the front, back and sides of the waist. The waist is also decorated with two rows of stylised stiff white and gold foliage like frills. The arms are decorated with gold bangles at the wrists, and arm bands at the bicep. At the neck is a large gold collar consisting of three bands, the lowest of which is decorated with another layer of the stylised gold frills. The figure is completed with an elaborate gold and white hat consisting of a gold cap surmounted with upstanding gold branches and white flowers. Some of the background around the figure is painted in pale blue. The design is signed and annotated with the name of the production, act & scene, and character.

Object history | This costume design by Anthony Holland is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1996. This design was executed for the production of Aladdin on Ice held at the Empire Pool, Wembley, 1974. The production was directed and produced by Gerald Palmer, with choreography by Reg Park. Historical significance: An example of ice show costume design by an artist who specialised in this field during the second half of the 20th century. |
