Physical description

Design for Danny la Rue in the Winston Club Cabaret, showing a full length female figure, wearing a full length dress, the bodice in white with a high neck, the long sleeves ending in wide purple cuffs, the tight fitting white skirt caught up sarong-style to the front, with, over and to the back, a white half skirt falling in large pleats lined in purple. She wears white shoes, copious necklaces and large dangling earrings and has her hair coiled in a bun with two long hair pins. The design is painted on black paper and is signed and dated and inscribed with the name of the actor and the venue.

Object history note

This is one of a collection of designs for pantomime and cabaret, given to the Theatre Museum by the designer, Cynthia Tingey, who created the costumes for 15 of the annual London Palladium pantomimes. This design was made for Danny La Rue in a cabaret at the Winston Club, London, 1961.

Historical significance: An example of cabaret costume design of the second half of the 20th century and of the work of a designer who specialised in pantomime and variety design. It is also an example of a design for a female impersonator.
