Design for showgirls in the Savoy Hotel Cabaret, showing three full length female figures, all dressed in shades of pink and wearing similar sleeveless 'leotards' with jewelled edging and trims, full length gloves, high feathered headdresses with tiaras or jewelled head ornaments, and earrings. The central figure carries a long, pale pink, tasselled feather boa. The design is painted on black paper and is signed and dated and inscribed with the name of the venue. Three fabric swatches, one in white backed with pink, one of white net with pink and silver 'tinsel', one of pale pink net, are attached by pins to the lower edge of the design. On the reverse are two rough crayon sketches of figures.

Object history | This is one of a collection of designs for pantomime and cabaret, given to the Theatre Museum by the designer, Cynthia Tingey, who created the costumes for 15 of the annual London Palladium pantomimes. This design was made for a cabaret at the Savoy Hotel, London, in 1965. Historical significance: An example of cabaret costume design of the second half of the 20th century and of the work of a designer who specialised in pantomime and variety design. |
