Electrotype copies were more expensive than plaster casts so large scale examples are relatively rare. The Museum's 1872 'List of Reproductions' makes special mention of the 'richly decorated' garlands of fruit and flowers and the three lion feet on this candelabrum. Electrotyping replicated the decoration more accurately than would a plaster copy. The original is one of a pair of Italian candelabra given to Chester Cathedral in 1880 by the Duke of Westminster.(2014)
Object history
Purchased from Giovanni Franchi in 1872 for £110.
Historical context
After one of a pair of candlesticks presented to Chester Cathedral by the Duke of Westminster in about 1880. The candelabra are said to have come from the Church of S. Tommaso in Milan, but are related to three pairs of candelabra in Rome by Orazio Censore (d. 1622): one in S. Trinità dei Pellegrini and two in S. Andrea della Valle.
