'Stangenglas' is a German term for a large, cylindrical communal drinking vessel. It can contain several litres of beer, and would have been passed around the table on special occasions. When not in use it would be displayed on a high shelf. The painted decoration on such glasses often refers to its users. This one bears the arms of the Brandstetter family in Austria, and is dated 1562.
