Design for Alice Fitzwarren in Dick Whittington and His Cat, showing a full length female figure, wearing a Tudor-inspired costume, the low, square necked bodice in dark blue decorated with thin bands of turquoise down the fronts and at the edges over a full sleeved, scoop necked white blouse, each sleeve gathered in with three broad dark blue bands edged in turquoise, the shoulder sleeves decorated with bands of turquoise and trimmed at the shoulders with turquoise bows, the ankle length skirt in lime green with two bands of dark green to the hem with a white lace petticoat beneath and, over, a white apron edged with a pattern of white swirls. She wears a white close fitting cap with a descending point to the forehead. The design is signed and dated and on the reverse is inscribed with the name of the actor and the character.

Object history | This is one of a collection of designs for pantomime and cabaret, given to the Theatre Museum by the designer, Cynthia Tingey, who created the costumes for 15 of the annual London Palladium pantomimes. This design was made for the pantomime, Dick Whittington, at the London Palladium, 22 December 1980. The production was directed by Lionel Blair. Jackie Redding played Alice Fitzwarren. Historical significance: An example of pantomime costume design of the second half of the 20th century and of the work of a designer who specialised in pantomime and variety design. |
