Design for Alice Fitzwarren in Dick Whittington and His Cat, showing a full length female figure, wearing an Elizabethan style costume, the pale apricot, square necked dress with a farthingale, the bodice with a long stomacher decorated with a swirling pattern of white tendrils, the trunk sleeves 'winged' with wide gold ribbon loops and bows and narrowing to hand ruffs, the skirt open to the front to reveal an underskirt patterned with stylised leaf forms, with, over, a voluminous 'lawn' overdress randomly patterned with gold flowers, the fronts edged with a wide band of gold swirls and rising to form a high head-rail behind. At the neck a white ruff and a white and gold pendant jewel. She wears a brown wig of tight curls and a gold and white hair ornament with a pendant jewel to the forehead and pendant pearl earrings. The design is signed and dated and on the reverse is inscribed with the name of the actor and the character.

Object history | This is one of a collection of designs for pantomime and cabaret, given to the Theatre Museum by the designer, Cynthia Tingey, who created the costumes for 15 of the annual London Palladium pantomimes. This design was made for the pantomime, Dick Whittington, at the London Palladium, 22 December 1980. The production was directed by Lionel Blair. Jackie Redding played Alice Fitzwarren. Historical significance: An example of pantomime costume design of the second half of the 20th century and of the work of a designer who specialised in pantomime and variety design. |
