Place of origin

This monumental tomb is one of a number of plaster casts of commemorative effigies acquired by the Museum in the late 19th century. On 13 May 1486, Jacopo Stefano Brivio's sons commissioned Tommaso Cazzaniga and Benedetto Briosco to complete the tomb of their father, which had been begun by Francesco Cazzaniga in 1484. The monument was finished by September 1488. Above the sarcophagus is a figure of the Virgin and Child, while below is God the Father flanked by two angels. The sides of the sarcophagus are carved with scenes from the childhood of Christ: the Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation in the Temple and Flight into Egypt. The bases of the pillars supporting the sarcophagus are decorated with medallions of classical subjects.
