This is a cast of one of a series of gilded and painted terracotta roundels with portraits of emperors made for Cardinal Wolsey (1471-1530). The terracotta was produced the Florentine artist Giovanni da Maiano, who had come over to work in Britain in the 16th century. The plaster cast is one of several commissioned by the Museum relatively late in the formation of the cast collection, after it had been recommended at a Museum meeting in 1904. The cast cost £15, and in addition £4 10s. was paid for scaffolding to be erected at Hampton Court.
