This is a plaster cast of a marble relief Amadeo carved for the tomb of Bartolommeo Colleoni (d.1475) in Bergamo. Colleoni was a condottiere or mercenary leader. Although he spend the greater part of his career in the service of Venice, and is commemorated there by an equestrian statue by Andrea del Verrocchio (b.1435; d.1488), Colleoni chose to be buried in his birthplace, Bergamo. In the year of his death Amadeo was already engaged in work on the tomb, as a letter from the Duke of Milan dated 10 December, 1475 stated that Amadeo was owed 900 ducats for his work on it.
