Painting

1628-1656 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Painting, opaque watercolour and gold on paper, two very small studies of aged figures, a man (right) and a woman (left), are mounted facing each other on a sheet with later decoration. On the right, a flowering plant ( possibly 18th century) is contained within a vertical cartouche; an identical cartouche contains a Persian inscription identifying the woman as Ruba'i Basri and the man as Junayd. There is also a hijri date, 980, which seems implausible. It could conceivably also have been changed from 1080, 1669-1670, which seems equally unlikely.
