AN ASCETIC UNDER A TREE Opaque watercolour on paper Murshidabad, Bengal c. 1760 D.1197-1903 This holy man is wearing the stitched robe typical of Muslim ascetics, worn to symbolise their earthly poverty. He holds an offering of flowers in a leaf cup, which he is perhaps about to launch as an offering into the river beside him.(27/9/2013)
