Silver objects became sought-after luxury items for high-ranking officials and wealthy people during the Tang dynasty (AD 618-960). By the beginning of the 7th century large quantities of silver in exotic shapes were imported along the Silk Road from Central Asia to China. Chinese craftsmen soon acquired new manufacturing techniques and produced silver cups and bowls in the traditional style, such as this bowl.
