5. Head of a Devotee 300–500 Some of the scenes on Buddhist monuments included images of the laity. This example is made of stucco, a plaster largely composed of lime and sand. With the rapid expansion of Buddhist monasteries in Gandhara, stucco decoration provided a quick and economic alternative to stone carving.
