Water-colour painting depicting part of the design of a Moghul carpet made in the Royal Factory, Lahore, for the Palace at Amber, Jaipur, between 1625 and 1728. Details of part of the field, consisting of a flower garden of large and small palmettes of elaborate form (some with pomegranate centres, others with iris etc.), springing from scrolling stems also yielding conventional flowers, buds and leaves, interspersed with large and small 'cloud' motifs, in colours on a crimson ground. Border of large and small palmettes, flowers, buds and leaves on scrolling stems, in colours on a black ground, enclosed by a narrow upper band of a battlement repeat with palmettes on blue and orange grounds, alternatively, and by a lower band of palmette and floral spray repeat on an orange ground.

Production | The series was prepared at Jaipur, about 1900, from carpets in the Royal Palaces and in the State (or City) Museum, by Rajput students working under the supervision of Sir Swinton Jacob, K. C. I. E., at the instigation of the late William Griggs, Esq., to be reproduced as illustrations (chromo-lithographs) in the 'Asian Carpets Portfolio' published by Griggs and Sons in 1905. |
