This relief is made by J.W. Bentley in Britain in ca. 1863. It is a reduced copy of a terracotta relief acquired by the Museum in 1861 as a work by Luca della Robbia (1400-1482), which has only recently been identified as a nineteenth-century forgery, possibly by Giovanni Bastianini (1830-1868). The ivory was a prize object in the Society of the Arts exhibition of 1863. Nothing more is known of the artist.

Physical description
Carved ivory plaque with depiction of a monk, full figure, in profile, seated at a desk, facing right and transcribing from a book on a raised lectern. The elief is monogrammed 'J W B' bottom right.

Object history
The ivory was a price object in the Society of Arts Exhibition of 1863. Bought for £10 from the artist in 1864.
Production
Bought as a copy of a terracotta relief by Luca della Robbia, but actually a copy of a terracotta relief probably by Giovanni Bastianini, mid 19th century.
