The two figures of the Virgin Mary and St John, stand on a mound with stones in the hollows. The Virgin stands on the right, looking upward and with her hands loosely clasped. St John on the left, turns to support her with his left arm round her shoulders. This object originally formed part of a Crucifixion group. Such small-scale devotional objects were sometimes included in 'cabinets of curiosity'.
