Object history | This doll has been redressed and rewigged. It belonged to Dorothea Schön, who was born in 1899. Dorothea, nee Engel had the doll from 1912 and it was passed to her daughter Dorothea Law, nee Schön, in 1935. |
Historical context | Marion Kaulitz produced and distributed dolls, doll heads and doll clothes, most of which she made. Heads from the same mould were given different wigs and clothes to represent boys and girls in colourful costumes. She also made dolls with fabric faces. Her name was generally put on the base of the doll's neck. Kaulitz registered two trademarks in Germany in 1909 and 1911. The first has a picture which included the words MUNCHNER KUNSTLER KAULITZPUPPEN and the second the name KAULITZ. She won a gold medal at the Brussels Exhibition, 1910 and a special diploma at an exhibition in Elberfeld, Germany, 1909. She was called the instigator of the PUPPENREFORM |
