Ring

2nd century BC (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Chinese jade-carvers were equally skilful working with hardstones such as chalcedony and agate, as here. This small ring is made from moss agate, so-called because of the natural moss-like pattern in the stone.

Noblemen in ancient China strung together beads, tubes, rings and plaques to form pendant sets and wore them as personal ornaments, a practice highly praised by Confucius and his contemporaries.
