Tray
ca.1650-1700 (made)
Place of origin |
A rectangular gold lacquer tray with inverted corners and an everted border. The central well depicts a landscape at the water's edge consisting of two large rocky hills to the left and two smaller rocks to the right, separated by a river, over which is a bridge with a Chinese scholar and attendant carrying a jar just starting to cross from the right. There are several buildings to the left, from thatched dwellings in the bottom left to a pagoda on top of the hill, all set among trees and vegetation, most notably a plant with red flowers growing on the main rock to the right; boats are moored in the water to the right and wispy clouds are depicted in the sky. The landscape is depicted in gold and silver hiramaki-e and takamaki-e lacquer, inlaid with coral and tortoiseshell, on a fundame lacuer ground; both the top and underside of the border of the tray are decorated in a stylised brocade pattern with a silvered-metal rim. The underside of the main panel is in gold nashi-ji lacquer, with an ornate and raised foot in each of the four corners.
