Photograph
ca.1882-86 (photographed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This dramatic view is looking direclty up into the dome of the temple. The carved marble ceiling has a multipetaled lotus in the centre, concentric circles of geometric patterns, floral motifs and figures, overlaid with sixteen larger sculptures of female deities. The rich marble interiors, characteristic of Jain temples in western India, often contrast with the austerity of the exteior. They are thought to be so profusely decorated because they are regarded as replicas of the celestial assembly halls of the tirthankaras.
