Tawse or punishment strap, of hide. The tawse consists of a long thick leather strap, slightly waisted to give greater flexibility (it was sometimes customary to use a tawse after steeping it in water to make it heavier) which divides into two thongs just below the middle. The top surface of the tawse is polished, and marked with a slightly recessed delineating line at each edge; a hole has been punched in one end.

Object history
Donor states that this tawse originally cost £1.50 in 1972. He adds "...The tradition of belting unruly pupils is said, however, to originate in Aberdeen. (In 1650, a teacher of Greek at Aberdeen Grammar School, took out a pistol & shot dead an unruly pupil. The belt was less severe & its use was abolished by the European Court of Justice in 1984)..."
