Object history
References: (From donor's letter): "As far as I recollect, this style of satchel was already out of date in my own schooldays in the 1940's. I, and most of my colleagues, had satchels with a single long shoulder strap...At all events, it would not have been suitable for William to wear to school in the 1970's, & would inevitably have led to his being ridiculed had he done so"

Bought (probably in Edinburgh) for the donor's son, William John Lovell shortly after his birth on 10/03/1968, by the donor's aunt, Miss Edna Ruth Lovell (1897-1989). It has not been used (see reference to donor's letter).
