This was described as 17th century when it was acquired in 1872, but it is much more likely to be a 19th century imitation of a 17th century piece. Renaissance metalwork was very popular in the 19th century and was created in many centres in Germany, including Nuremberg, where this was acquired.

Gilded metal attachment set with coloured pastes, Germany, 1850-1870.
Physical description
Gilt metal mount, set with coloured pastes. The mount is made of cast metal in a renaissance design, with a bird with open wings standing on a branch screwed to the centre. There is a green stone in a closed oval mount on the bird's chest, with six other coloured pastes in geometric settings arranged around the bird. On the back are two screw fittings to attach the mount to something else.
