A cylindrical gilt brass table clock engraved with a coat of arms, or a ram's head crowned proper, surmounted by a similar armorial crest, with the initials G.v.H., within a wreath and a border of pear branches and faces. The single handed horizontal dial is engraved with the sun and provided with pegs for telling the time at night. German, mid-16th century.

A cylindrical gilt brass table clock, German, mid-16th century.
Physical description
Case: Brass drum-shaped case, engraved with interlacing strapwork and foliage and gilt; removable base with four turned feet and engraved with a coat-of-arms, or a ram's head, crowned proper surmounted by a crest of the same, with the intials G&H, the whole within a wreath and a border of pear branches and masks.
Dial: Brass dial, 6.7 cm in diameter. Outer hour ring engraved I to XII in Roman figures, with small stars of variable shape, mainly 6-pointed, at the half hour marks. The dial centre engraved with a decorative 12-pointed sunburst. Single iron hand with tail.
Movement: The movement of iron throughout, the front plate a disc with small central hole, the back-plate a ring with internal bars. Fusee of 12 turns, with stopwork. Cut line. Verge escapement. Bar balance with curved arms; outer bearing in a simple steel pinned cock.
Bristle reguator on a steel arm pivoted on the outer-ring of the plate. A 6T pinion on the fusee arbor outside the front plate engages with a brass 32-T wheel on the same arbor as the hour-hand.
