Small enamelled brass pocket triptych, Russia, 19th century.
Physical description
Small enamelled brass triptych, consisting of three rectangular plates, hinged together. The centre plate shows the Virgin and Child, and the other two have two male saints on each, facing towards the centre. There are faint Cyrillic characters above each plate, identifying the saints. The figures are all in brass, on a background enamelled with a blue cross on a white ground. On the back (outside) of the left-hand plate there is a raised disc with religious symbols and inscriptions in Cyrillic on a blue, green and white enamelled ground. Above the central plate are two loops which hold a bar, which has a long prop attached to its centre, to prop up the triptych when open.
