These earrings are typical of the kind fashionable in Britain from the mid-19th century onwards. They are made of gilt metal set with facetted garnets from Bohemia, and are unlikely to be much older than 1872, when they were acquired. They were bought in southern Germany as 18th-century German work.

Physical description | Pair of earrings set with garnets and pearls. Each consists of a heart-shaped frame, upside down, with three projections on the lower edge, from which hang pendants. The two outer pendants are garnet drops, and the central pendant is a trefoil of garnets. The central pendant has been moved up to fill the central space of the frame on one earring. The entire surface is covered with facetted garnets, and five small pearls. The wires are missing. |
