Girl's hat of plaited undyed straw trimmed with a wreath of artificial
wild flowers (including poppies, marguerites, and cornflowers),
finished at the ends with ties of red petersham ribbon fastening in a
bow at the back. The hat has a downturned curving circular brim edged
with red petersham ribbon, and narrowing towards the back, and a deep
dome-shaped crown; the crown has an internal band of oyster-coloured
rayon.

Object history | References: Worn by the donor's eldest daughter, Marian (born 1948), later a member of staff of the V & A's Metalwork Department, & possibly by her younger sisters Louise (born 1950) & Helen (born 1958). The donor's husband was in the Diplomatic Corps, and the family lived in various countries, notably China, Poland, the U.S.A. and Italy. |
