Girl's Breton Hat

Internal circumference:52.4 cm
Girl's breton hat of cherry-red glazed plaited straw trimmed with a
band of red petersham ribbon finishing in a bow at the back. The hat
has an upturned circular brim, and a cylindrical crown whose concave
top rises again at the centre; a hat elastic is attached to the inside
of the crown, beneath the internal band of pink petersham ribbon.

Worn by the donor's eldest daughter, Marian (born 1948),
later a member of the staff of the V & A's Metalwork
Department. The donor's husband was in the Diplomatic
Corps, and the family lived in various countries,
notably China, Poland, the U.S.A. and Italy.
