Tureen and stand with cover and internal liner. Square, lobed body with domed lid, in eight lobed sections surmounted by a cast silver finial of a family crest, a bear's paw holding a fleur-de-lis, by John Wilmin Figg of London. A plain, removable internal liner rests on the scalloped rim of the tureen, decorated with shell and C shaped scroll-work in relief, the handles either side and four supporting legs formed of shell, scroll and acanthus relief decoration, the stand, circular supported on four shell feet with a plain concave edge rising to a circular platform which has a ridged rim into which fit the feet of the tureen. An engraved coat of arms on the side of the body of the tureen and an engraved crest on the shoulder of the stand.

Tureen and stand, Sheffield plate, the finial, silver, Sheffield, ca.1840, made by Waterhouse, Hatfield & Co., the finial, silver, London hallmarks for 1842-43, mark of John Wilmin Figg.
Physical description
Tureen and stand with cover and internal liner. Marks and inscriptions
  • Engraved with a coat of arms for Gosselin, originally from Guernsey. Branches of the family afterwards settled in Hertfordshire. The arms of Gosling or Gosselin of Bishops Stortford are illustrated in D.S. Howard's Chinese Armorial Porcelain, but only the first quarter: Gules, a chevron between three crescents ermine, is shown. (On the body of the tureen)
  • Engraved with a crest, a bear's paw erased proper, holding a fleur-de-lis, or. Most branches of the Gosling or Gosselin family use a contemporary British caricature of the head of a man of African-Caribbean descent as a crest. (On the side of the stand.)
