Wrought iron
England; 18th century
Wrought iron brackets had and still have many uses, including supports for shelves, inn signs, trade signs, landings, lanterns and hoods or canopies over doorways. They provided an ideal opportunity for displaying technical skill, and often reflect contemporary ornamental designs. These three examples show typical 18th-century decorative motifs: elaborate scrollwork, foliage and panelled borders.
