The WR monogram of William III and Queen Mary and the two handles are roughly cast, and the former suggests the lock may have belonged to a royal house. The gilding of these parts differs from the body of the lock and suggests they were a later addition, though the bases of the handles may be original. It is engraved with tulips, foliage and scrollwork. The fine mechanism bears assembly marks: punched daisy heads, pairs of leaves and the roman numeral XXII. The numerals V, III, and VI can be seen on the edge of the lock.(07/1994) |
