Wood overlaid with border strips and iron repoussé plaques assembled in the 19th century from a number of different objects. One of the border plaques has been attached upside down. The lid bears the arms of France surrounded by the collar of the Order of St Michel with the device of King Charles IX of France (1560- 74). The figures represent: Vulcan, Minerva, Mars, Diana and Neptune on the front; Saturn, Juno, Apollo, Venus with Cupid, and Jupiter on the back; five of the Cardinal Virtues Fortitude, Hope, Prudence (divided into two), Temperance and Charity on the sides.
