Gallery label
BALCONY Wrought iron France; c. 1770 The central monogram of crossed keys and interlaced Ls and Cs supported by hounds suggests that the balcony may be the work of Jean François Cahon, blacksmith to King Louis XVI of France (1754-93). The balcony comes from the house Cahon bought in Versailles in 1770, No. 1, Impasse des Ecuries, so the initials are probably his and those of the king, his patron. The hounds and keys are the symbols of the Guild of Blacksmiths. Museum No. M.51-1909(07/1994)
