WEATHERCOCK Wrought iron and brass, gilded Belgium; 1700-50 Weathercocks lack compass points, so were only intended to show the general wind direction. The form of a cockerel on a rod appeared on top of both church and secular buildings in England before the 11th century, but was not fashionable on the Continent until much later. This example comes from the church of St Lambert, Woluwe and may date from its 1725 restoration. Gift Dr W.L. Hildburgh, FSA M.181-1926(07/1994)
