Altar Cross

1552 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

On one side only: copper-gilt plaques on a wooden core, with nielloed silver plaques at the end of each arm of the cross, and one in the centre. The arms richly engraved with foliage, terminating in quatrefoil-in-square ends. The five nielloed plaques depict, clockwise from top: Mary Magdalene; St Mark; St John (from a Crucifixion group); St John the Evangelist and (centre) the crucified Christ. The two plaques depicting the Evangelists were probably originally on the back of the cross; the plaques of St John and Mary Magdalene probably flanked the central Crucifixion scene.
