Object history | The crown of roses worn by this silver figure of a nun suggests she can be identified as St Rose of Lima. St Rose, born Isabel Flores y Oliva (1586-1617) was the first saint of America, and was named patron of Peru, all of America, the Indies and the Philippines. She was beatified in 1668, and canonized shortly afterwards in 1671. This statuette may have been a devotional gift to a chapel dedicated to her. The Museum acquired the figure (together with a silver triptych in the same lot) from the collection of F. A. Crisp, FSA, which was auctioned at Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge (London) on 16 November 1922 (lot 62). |
